What went wrong at Manchester United this season?

With Louis van Gaal succeeding in bringing the Manchester United team back in the Champions League, everyone was hoping that this season would have been a successful one.

Instead, Manchester United found themselves trailing in the Premier League, knocked out of Europe as well as the FA Cup. So what exactly went wrong with the Red Devils?

Different reasons may explain the current situation. Some people argue that Louis van Gaal is not the right man in the right place. Indeed, van Gaal favors a more defensive approach to football, but this has not been successful in the Premier League. Many times the fans have been urging their team to attack as they felt that there was a lack of urgency in the team. If Manchester United wants to be successful again, they will need to return to the free-flowing attacking football that was made famous by Sir Alex Ferguson.

Another reason will be the lack of a quality striker. Despite the fact that Anthony Martial was signed, there is still a lack of quality forwards in the team. More often than not, Louis van Gaal played Martial out of position on the wings and United did not have a quality man in the central role. Rooney’s form has been poor this season and changes might be needed next season if Manchester United wants to compete for the title.

There is also a lack of creative players in the team. Most of the offensive actions depend on Juan Mata, and Manchester United will need to bring some more creative players in the team if they want to challenge for the title next season. Players such as Angel di Maria were brought in by van Gaal but has failed miserably and has since then been sold. Whoever is the manager next season will have to invest in more creative players to boost the sides attacking option.
